Malcolm was David I's grandson and came to the throne aged 11. He was deeply involved with the church and founded the Abbey of Cupar. Malcolm IV was known as 'the maiden' as he took a vow of chastity and never married. His reign was troubled:- the King of Norway sacked Aberdeen; Somerled, Lord of Argyll, sacked Glasgow; and King Henry II of England forced Malcolm to cede Northumbria to the English.
He died aged 23 and was buried alongside his grandfather in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Dunfermline.
